How to Make a Lyric Video

A lyric video is the fastest way to release a single on YouTube with a video that holds the viewer to the end: the words on screen, in typography and motion that fit the song, with no shooting day and no actors. In most cases it goes live together with the single, so it has to speak the same visual language as the cover.
In this guide we gathered what we learned in twenty years in the music industry: what to prepare before you start, how to choose the type of video, what the process looks like, and which mistakes cost time and money.

What to prepare before you start

Choosing the type of video

Common mistakes that cost time

Lyrics that are not final. The most common mistake. Changing one line after the video is synced means opening everything again.
Low-resolution photos. A photo sent over WhatsApp or taken from Instagram looks blurry on a big screen. Send the original file.
A video that does not speak to the cover. When the cover, the video and the promo are made in different places, the artist looks like three different artists. Better that everything comes from one visual language, ideally from one studio.
An MP3 instead of a WAV. Low quality, and sometimes not the final version. The video is built on the master.
Uploading without social versions. The YouTube video is horizontal. Stories, Reels and TikTok need a vertical cut, and it is best to order it in advance.

How long it takes

It depends on the type of video and its complexity: a simple animation is quick, a premium or AI video takes more. Once we hear the song and see the material, we give an exact timeline. A single’s release date is always part of the plan.

Do it yourself or in a studio?

There are tools that generate automatic captions over a background. That solves “the words on screen”, but not what sells the song: typography that fits the artist, motion at the right pace, one language with the cover, and finishing. A studio lyric video is design, not captions. And if the budget is small, we have simple, fast types that still look like a production.
